Freixenet: sparkling figures
The Spanish producer of cava, Freixenet, controls roughly a third of the domestic market. Nevertheless, whilst in Spain it has to compete with Codorniu, comparable in importance, the Freixenet Group is the unbeatable world market leader in the cava sector. “80% of the Spanish export of cava is in our hands. On average we export to over 140 countries” confirms Freixenet’s president, José Luis Bonet. Nearly 65% of the entire production is exported. In the past financial year 2001/2002, Freixenet sold 198 million bottles throughout the world. The net profit increased to 25.6 million euros, 54 per cent compared to the previous year. Although the high exchange rate of the euro in the current financial year will lead to a reduction of roughly 25% on the transactions carried out in the United States, Bonet has also announced a slight increase in this year’s profit. Freixenet, with 89 per cent, also has the German cava market in its hands. 30.7 million of the total 50 million sold over the last year belonged to the Freixenet Group, which is also represented by the brands Segura Viudas and Castellblanch.
