Chupa Chups: the inventor has died

The inventor of the world famous Chupa Chups, Enric Bernat Fontlladosa, has died. He passed away on Saturday, at the age of 80, in his home in Barcelona, reported the company’s spokesperson on Monday. A member of the third generation of a sweet manufacturing family, Bernat gained control of the company in a difficult period. He eliminated the majority of the products from the range in order to concentrate on those special lollipops. Five years later they were for sale in 300,000 shops. The company told the shops to display the sweets close by the till and not in glass jars out of the reach of children, as was the custom up to that time. Nowadays, Chupa Chups annually produces four thousand million lollipops in fifty different flavours, which are sold in 170 countries.
